So I started playing TTrpgs with dnd 5e and have recently gotten more into pathfinder 1e, as I enjoy its complexity and customisability much more. But when Looking at pathfinder cantrips, as someone who is used to having a reliable cantrip to fall back on as a spellcaster, I obviously have an ingrained dislike for Pathfinder Cantrips being pretty useless.Įnter the Combo of the traits Wayang spell hunter and Magical Lineage, a combination I had heard of that is popular with Magus Players, who wanna Basically get access to an infinite amount of Intensifies Shocking grasps. Now obviously this is pretty powerful for a magus and as a player should not be done out of courtesy, but I had a thought. A wizard could do the same combo, but for a spell like Snowball, to basically get a scaling cantrip. Now I feel like as a wizard who does not have stuff like Spellstrike and Spell Combat, this would not be as busted as it is for a Magus. Now what I cant gauge, Is if it is even required, or if you usually have enough spell slots for a day to not have to pick up a crossbow? because I really don't wanna pick up a crossbow.įirst of all: The general understanding is that these traits cannot actually reduce the level of a spell below its starting level. There was a specific FAQ saying so for Magical Lineage, but unfortunately since Wayang Spellhunter came from a minor side book (which don't get the full FAQ treatment) it never explicitly got the same. Some people will argue that because it was not explicitly called out, it is able to reduce the spell slot used by a spell. Most people seem to accept that the Magical lineage ruling would also apply to wayang spellhunter because they have the same effect. Of course, a GM may rule otherwise, but I wouldn't expect this reading to be accepted at an average table. That being said, they are still very good traits regardless, because metamagic is very strong, and removing part of the downside of metamagic (or all of it in some cases) makes it even stronger. Wayang Spellhunter does have some background restrictions, so keep that in mind unless your GM allows you to ignore the requirements of region traits, but their intended benefit isn't giving you infinite uses of a spell, it's making metamagic cheaper.Įdit: The main reason it's so popular with Magus is allowing you to use Intensified Shocking Grasp (which allows the spell to scale beyond its usual level 5 cap) while still using a 1st level spell slot. If you're level 1-4, pick up a flask of acid and use Acid Splash with it as a focus. It's 1d3+1 damage, slightly below what a light crossbow does, but can be cast forever. Magical lineage, Metamagic master (aka wayang spellhunter): These traits let us pick a spell and each trait gives us a free level to spend on metamagic. There's some other tricks to raise it higher but they require more specific builds. When you use this spell with a metamagic feat, it uses up a spell slot one level lower than it normally would. If it is underpowered, suggest the player also use a feat on Sacred Geometry(quicken spell) so they can do it as a swift action instead, or some other potent metamagic- Intensified Spell is particularly popular for a shocking grasp magus.Higher levels, you're unlikely to run out of spell slots, so you don't really need to worry about a 'fallback' so much.Įither way, Wayang + Lineage are amazing traits for any spellcaster that's going to go heavy into metamagic on a specific spell. Wayang Spellhunter: You grew up on one of the wayang-populated islands of Minata, and your use of magic while hunting has been a boon to you. If it is within reason for your game, it is, in fact, RAW and can work fine. If this build is likely to be overpowered, consider applying the errata to magical lineage to Wayang Spellhunter as well, as e.g. Note as well that shocking grasp is one of the weaker options for this combination- it just does melee damage- and that every spellcaster can have at most one spell specialized in this way. You should consider denying it on the basis of game balance, or suggesting/allowing your other players to use similar exploits. Running this trait in accordance with the rules makes it much more powerful than most other similar traits. Just because the rules say something doesn't mean that is a good idea for your game. In combination, the two can indeed lower a +1 spell level adjustment metamagic to -1, which can indeed make a 1st-level spell a level 0 spell, which, for some classes including the Magus, gives it special properties unique to 0-level spells (like not getting used up when cast). Unlike Magical Lineage, Wayang Spellhunter was never errataed to prevent spell-level lowering.
